OCTOBER’S BIRTHSTONE
As we move further and further into the year yet another month and a new birthstone is upon us, which brings us to the opal. October’s birthstone is a beautiful delicate gemstone that ranks 5 ½ on the mohs’ scale of mineral hardness. The opal is one of the more versatile gemstones with a large array of shades. There are three different types of opals, boulder, white and black, each of these come in a large range of colours. Provided below are some images for your reference. Percy Marks has had an appreciation for opals since very early on, with Percy Marks’ impeccable eye for quality this helped him acquire some of the best opals on the market and was able to make a name for our company in the opal trade which still lives on today.
In one of our first blog posts we wrote a piece on Halley’s comet. It was about a large black opal that was named after the 1986 comet that passed through our skies, the same year the largest black opal from the whole of Lightning Ridge was unearthed. The opal weighs 2,000cts and measures 100 x 66 x 63mm and was even mentioned in the Guinness book of records. Percy Marks is still the proud owner of this amazing gem however this opal has recently come up for sale and all bids over $500,000.00 will be considered.

Percy Marks is very proud of its long standing status in the jewellery industry. We have now reached our one hundred and thirteenth year since Percy Marks himself first opened up shop in 1899. Percy Marks has seen many pivotal points in history and survived many different economic climates. We have been lucky enough to see our loyal customers through many of their milestones throughout life such as weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and so on. Now here at Percy Marks the team had the opportunity to celebrate Mr. Cameron Marks’s latest milestone, his 50th birthday!
